Philosophy
The health and physical education curriculum at Pope John XXIII High School gives each student an opportunity to develop athletic skills and to improve and maintain his/her level of physical fitness through exercise and nutrition; the course also prepares students to safely operate a motor vehicle and to administer basic emergency first aid care.

HPE 8 Health/Physical Education 8

The 8th grade Physical Education curriculum is meant to introduce students to a variety of physical activities and sports, which include badminton, soccer and softball with emphases on skills, rules, team play, and sportsmanship. The class meets 3 times a week.

Open to Grades: 8
Prerequisite: None, course runs concurrently with Study Skills (3 days Physical Education/2 days Study Skills)


HPE 100 Health/Physical Education 9

The curriculum of the Physical Education Department is designed to introduce students to a variety of physical activities with emphases on motor skills and physical fitness, team play, leadership, cooperation, and sportsmanship. 

The course is divided into two quarters of Physical Education and two of Health.

Open to Grades: 9
Prerequisite: None


HPE 200 Health/Physical Education 10

Physical Education 10 builds on the freshman curriculum by emphasizing rules, techniques, and team play strategies to further enhance individual skills. The health component includes First Aid, CPR, Nutrition and Drivers Education. All students take the state drivers ed. exam at the conclusion of the class. The course is divided into two quarters of Physical Education and two of Health.

Prerequisite: HPE 100


Note: ONLY Juniors and Seniors with a minimum CUMULATIVE GPA of 3.0 may opt to take an additional course in lieu of HPE 300/400.

NOTE: Students will not receive Health/Physical Education credit unless they pass the yearly Health unit.

HPE 300/400 Health/Physical Education 11/12

Physical Education 11/12 continues the previous year’s activities with emphasis placed on individual and lifetime sports.  It will encourage and enhance participation in these activities, which will help to satisfy the student’s own needs and interests.  The health component will deal with sex education and relationships.

Prerequisite: HPE 200


HPE 303 Exercise Science

Students taking exercise science will examine the relationship between exercise and human performance and the role of physical activity in the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Exercise science consists of several overlapping disciplines, including biomechanics, exercise physiology and biochemistry, growth and development, exercise nutrition, measurement and evaluation, and exercise psychology. The program of study is designed to provide an effective blend of classroom instruction and practical experience.

Note: Students taking exercise science are expected to participate in some physical activity

Open to Grades: 11, 12
Prerequisite: Concurrent enrollment in Anatomy and Physiology
